02 — A LIFE IN MOTION

From Pleiku to Sydney.

A life shaped by war, movement, martial arts and more than four decades of hands-on experience.

1964

Born in Pleiku.

Duy Long Nguyen was born on 17 October 1964 in Pleiku, in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

1972

Childhood during war.

Longy’s childhood unfolded against the upheaval of the Vietnam War, including the 1972 Easter Offensive and his family’s temporary departure from Pleiku.

1970s

Martial arts.

Training became an important part of his childhood and the beginning of a lifelong fascination with movement and the body.

1980–81

Japan.

Another chapter of the journey took Longy to Japan before his eventual arrival in Australia.

1981

Sydney.

Longy arrived in Australia and began building a new life in Sydney.

1980s

From martial arts to treatment.

His knowledge of martial arts increasingly crossed into massage, pressure-point work and hands-on treatment.

BY 1990

A practice built by word of mouth.

Longy’s Sydney practice increasingly grew through personal referrals, bringing him into contact with people from sport, media, business, entertainment and public life.

1990s

Professional sport.

Longy’s work increasingly took him into professional sport and elite competition, including rugby league, boxing, tennis and international athletics.

LATE 1990s

Film sets.

Longy’s reputation also carried his work into major film production in Sydney, including the world surrounding The Matrix.

1998

Fashion, media and public life.

By the late 1990s, Longy’s clientele and professional circle reached fashion, entertainment, media and public life.

1998–99

The Lowy connection.

Steven Lowy first came to Longy with an Achilles tendon injury and later returned for other physical problems. That relationship led to a longstanding personal connection with Frank Lowy.

2000 — SYDNEY OLYMPICS

An Olympic year.

During the Sydney Olympics, Longy’s work again crossed into international elite athletics, including the British sprinting world.

The Dragon’s Journey.

Longy’s life story was published as The Dragon’s Journey, with a foreword jointly written by Rupert Murdoch and Frank Lowy.

TODAY

Still hands-on.

Longy continues to practise in Sydney, with clinics in Paddington and Milperra. He has a particular focus on chronic neck pain, recurring stiffness and headaches where neck tension or other musculoskeletal factors may be involved, while continuing to see people for other musculoskeletal pain and injuries.
